Cookbooks make splendid gifts—not just for the wow factor when the book is unwrapped, but because they're gifts that continue to give long after the holiday decorations come down.
Every year, the Good Eating staff proffers a list of cookbooks that we think will make great holiday gifts. This year is no different, and as in years past, the books that we've selected span a variety of tastes, cooking levels and price tags.
Cooking at home can be more economical, yes, but that's just the beginning of the bonuses with inspired recipes from a new cookbook. Cooking can bring family members together, it can open a window to other cultures, it can teach kids to become more independent, and it is almost always a more nutritious way to eat.
Here you'll find our favorite books for the holiday season in each of 10 categories—from baking to Spanish to celebrity chefs—plus other contenders too good to ignore.

By Ralph Brennan with Gene Bourg (Vissi d'Arte Books, $45)
What it is: "Ralph Brennan's New Orleans Seafood Cookbook" comes from a member of a New Orleans family famous for the quality of its restaurants. The colorful cookbook does not focus on recipes from any particular establishment, however.
